Values and qualities
In the therapy sessions, we have recently been working on topics that answer the question: Who am I? This week we use the image of a tree with qualities and values that you carry within you.
Values determine how we respond in a given situation. Let’s take an example. You come home after a long day of work, want to make a cup of tea and see that the kitchen has “exploded”. The dishes from yesterday and the day before are still there, the garbage bag needs to be replaced and the box with waste paper is already full twice… You also have a voicemail from a friend who would like to talk to you because she is going through a difficult period. Depending on your values, you decide what to do first.
- If your greatest value is: rest and relaxation, then you first drink a cup of tea on the couch.
- If your value is: discipline, then you will then put the kitchen in order first.
- If the value comes after compassion, then you first call your girlfriend. The kitchen comes next.
Depending on your values and their importance, you decide which action comes first.
In this therapy session, we discussed the values and qualities that you carry with you. They are, as it were, the branches of the tree.
And so everyone gets to work. One writes the qualities and values in the branches. The other uses symbols to represent the qualities and values in the drawing.
A great way to become aware of what is actually happening inside and how we make decisions in daily life.
