Do something, one thing per day, maybe?
The world is quite an exciting place… and not always fun. And sometimes you may think…. I can’t help it, it’s hopeless, how rotten the world is now. The environment down the drain, inflation high, polarization through the roof, poverty enormous (the only bank that does well is the food bank) and “world peace”…. That never seems to happen. Sigh.
And yes, going to work full-time for the World Wildlife Fund or for a Missionary organization is quite a big step. We understand that someone might want to think about that a few more times…
But “chop” that goal into smaller pieces…. Think of it as a journey.
When you’re walking in the dark with your oil light on, you have no idea what’s happening one mile in front of you. Even two feet is far. Your view is limited, but it is not dark. You can see exactly what is just in front of you and that way you can still get to your goal step by step. (Psalm 119:105)
So let’s let go of those big goals (world peace) and let’s do one thing a day, for someone else. One thing…. Something to make someone else’s day a little more beautiful. Whatever it is. (Matthew 25:40)
Pooh, what then? Well, just some examples:
- Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
- Get a cup of coffee with the neighbor who is not doing so well.
- Throw some money in that collection box for a cause you do support.
- Send a positive response to a message that you read online, that it made your day happier.
- Send a card to…
Even smaller?
- Don’t put that sour reaction on a message on a facebook. More than enough misery online, don’t ad to it. .
- Did that other guy cut you off on the road? Let’s go, the world won’t change anything because of your reaction…
- Say a sincere “thank you” at the checkout instead of that automatic “nothing” response.
Not too difficult, right? And why would you want to do that? Well, the first human simple reason is: action = reaction. That one smile quickly returns another smile, which also gives you a little more energy for today.
The Bible also says something about it…
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.
Proverbs 12:25
When that guy who cut you off in traffic:
Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
1 Thessalonians 5:15
What would you like yourself?
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12
Sometimes you don’t feel like it anymore, God sees that too and encourages you with this verse:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:9-10
And with telling the Good News it works the same way… one step at a time. You really don’t have to stand directly on the soap box in the center of the town (to each his own gift) but you can also take small steps there:
- Share that special Bible verse on your “social” media.
- Call your friend and share a Bible verse that touches you for him / her.
- Send a message to your girlfriend you haven’t seen in so long and share one Bible verse.
Small steps… what kind of step are you going to take today? Come on, join us.
