Why people follow false prophets.
Sometimes it truly scares me: people read the Bible, but they do not understand it. They believe things that clearly do not align with what the Bible says, and they follow leaders who spread these ideas. Yet, they claim to be Christians. How is that possible? What does the Bible say about this?
1. People often choose what sounds good
The Bible clearly shows that some people are unable to recognize the truth, leading them to follow false teachings:
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4)
In other words, people often prefer to follow what feels good or what they want to hear, rather than what is true. This is precisely why they follow the wrong teachers, even when the Bible has made the truth clear for years.
2. False prophets mislead even the elect
The Bible warns that false prophets use grand words and impressive stories to deceive people:
“For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24)
Even believers who are faithful to God can be deceived, precisely by beautiful words and spectacular claims.
3. The heart can be blinded
Many people follow false teachings because they allow themselves to be led by their hearts, desires, and emotions, rather than by the Word of God:
“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality…” (2 Peter 2:1–2)
“For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:21–22)
The heart becomes blinded, the ears tuned to what sounds attractive, and before you know it, you are following something that is not of God.
4. The result: thinking they serve God while following false teachings
And so it happens:
- People follow a leader who sounds convincing.
- They focus on beautiful words and spectacular claims.
- They think they are serving God, but in reality, they are following something God did not give.
This is precisely what the Bible warns about: this doesn’t happen because someone is unintelligent, but because the heart is blinded and people allow themselves to be led by what “tickles the ears” or feels good.
5. The Biblical remedy: test everything against the Word
- Check every teaching against the Bible (Acts 17:11).
- Focus on Jesus Christ, the source of truth and life.
- Do not be led by beautiful words or emotional experiences.
- Realize that true guidance and insight come from God, not from a human or a popular teaching.
Whoever follows the Word does not let themselves be blinded by smooth talk or popular claims, but always seeks the truth in Jesus.
6. What to do with people who follow false teachings?
It is frustrating to see someone cling to false teachings. You might want to correct them, explain things, or convince them. But the Bible warns that this often does not work if their heart is blinded:
“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” (Matthew 7:6)
In other words, putting energy into a discussion that will bear no fruit is wasted effort. If they refuse to listen, the Bible even says this:
“Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.” (Isaiah 6:10)
Only God can open someone’s heart or, if someone refuses to listen, allow the heart to close even further. Our job is to remain faithful to the Word and live according to Jesus, not to try and convince someone through our own strength.
Final Thought
When people follow false teachings despite clear Biblical explanation, it shows how powerful deception and blindness can be. It doesn’t only happen to unbelievers, but also to believers who let their hearts be led by desires and feelings instead of God’s truth.
The only anchor is Jesus Christ. Not a person, not beautiful words, not an experience. Whoever understands this follows the God of the Bible and will not be misled by false prophets or false teachings.
