Vroom vroom…

And…. we are on our way to the Netherlands / Holland (Whatever you would like to call it). Without traffic jams and hassle. So far, so good.

Our guest address in NL still has a beautiful (!!) old school map of Europe from bygone times…

Do you notice something?

  • East Germany no longer exists, has now become one Germany again, as if the difference in culture is still very noticeable after all these years… (1990)
  • Yugoslavia no longer exists… Has now become Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo and they are still not friends… (1991–2001)
  • Czechoslovakia no longer exists… Has now become the Czech Republic and Slovakia. (1993)
  • The USSR no longer exists. Is now Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. (1991, 1992)
  • The Warsaw Pact no longer exists. Many of the old Warsaw Pact countries are now in the EU. Schengen zone and/or NATO.
  • On March 12, 1999, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland joined NATO. Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and the former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania followed in March 2004, along with Slovenia. On April 1, 2009 Albania also became a member of NATO.

A journey like today would have been a huge challenge before 1990. Poland was still in the Warsaw Pact, the Russians were still in East Germany, driving around with a Bible in your car was not always as free as it is now, the roads back then were “somewhat” different.

But it was possible! Several people smuggled Bibles to the East, in 1980 and 1981 there were food transports to Poland.

And now? Well…. yes… today we were back in NL in 7.5 hours… But…

  • Yesterday, we were brainstorming with people from Belarus to visit their country… You can only fly if you fly from Poland to Turkey… because the EU has boycotted Belarus… we don’t even talk about visas.
  • We also spoke to people from Ukraine… yes, you can go there… whether it is safe is another question.. We would like to go there to visit some friends… But…. Those friends live now… tell me where…
  • We have been planning to go to Russia for 3 years now. First there was Corona and everything was in lockdown, and now the opportunity to go to Russia seems further away than ever… The friends we have there… We still haven’t been able to visit them..
  • Today we saw Dutch Army equipment being transported to the East on the way to….

So, is it better now than before +/- 1990? Mhhh that’s an intriguing question… which we can’t answer, to be honest. We would love to say a definite Yes… but is it really better? For us (still) yes, we could (still) travel in complete freedom today… But well…. Until now, E still speaks Russian to the people in our target audiences… every day… which is a very bad sign. Although, we are happy that we can and are allowed to do the work we do. In complete freedom.
