It starts to live
She comes to the ’embroidery on photos’ workshop full of expectations. Something she has always wanted to try, but she has no idea how to start.
She chooses a photo of an autumn leaf.
But what next? Embroider the contours?
She is challenged to come up with multiple variations. Maybe embroider a leaf next to it?
She thinks that’s a nice idea. She traces the leaf with tissue paper, cuts it out and draws the leaf next to/partly over it with a pencil.
She is stuck in her own framework of how it should be done: working over the lines, cutting them neatly and making a second one next to them.
Overlapping, sticking out, twisting… These are stretching exercises in her head.
How do I choose where to puncture holes? How do I make the stem of the leaf thicker?
She asks everything. She doesn’t get a direct answer. Just try. Just start somewhere and you will get other ideas. First experience what happens.
And yes, after poking about 5 holes and starting to embroider, she gets the idea and starts trying it out. And so, step by step, she makes choices about how she wants to do something.
After the first threads have been embroidered, she is surprised with the effect: the whole picture comes to life!
The two hours pass quickly. She takes the materials home and returns next week to choose the frame.
The embroidery is finished, and she is proud of herself.
The workpiece is carefully cut and placed on colored paper to choose a frame.
We talk about contrast, look for colors used in the picture and embroidery, and look at the effect of these colors behind the workpiece.
She chooses a contrast color from the embroidery and a gold outer frame that emphasizes the photo itself.
And for the second time, the piece comes to life!
The work is carefully put in the bag to hang up at home, and she proudly leaves the building.
