Are we living in the end times?

A question that periodically arises is whether we are living in the “end times”.

~End Times: The end times, the end of times, the last days are a representation of the final time period (the end) of all human history and the return of Christ. The old world will end, the New world is coming.

And honestly, we understand that question. It seems that the misery in the world is coming to a boiling point and the end seems to be near. But is that so?

Let’s start with this: we don’t know. Really, we don’t! We cannot speculate about it because that is not correct:

But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Matthew 24:36

Jesus’ disciples also asked Him: “Tell us when will these things happen? And what is the sign of Your coming and of the end of the world?” And His answer was (among other things):

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Matthew 24:6-8

Well, that sounds like things are moving along, right? We have plenty of wars, rumors about wars, famine, earthquakes, contagious diseases too. You would say: we are ready! But…. think about this for a moment…

  • Immediately after Christ went to heaven, there was a HUGE persecution. People who were fed to the lions in the circus in Rome, burned up like torches, they did it all…wow.
  • In 1931, there was the worst flood ever in China. 4,000,000 deaths… The 2004 Tsunami is nothing compared to that…
  • Something closer to “our” time, world war two maybe? Concentration camps, the whole world participated, millions died…
  • The May 22, 1960 earthquake that struck the city of Valdivia in southern Chile is the most powerful ever recorded and is known as the Great Chilean Earthquake. It is believed to have measured 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale (MMS).
  • The Dust Bowl that struck America (1934, 1936 and 1939-1940) was catastrophic! Heavy dust storms that severely damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American and Canadian prairies in the 1930s. Areas as large as the Netherlands were suddenly completely uninhabitable. And again, and again, and again…
  • The Cold War between 1947 and 1991 maybe? It could have been over with the push of one button…
  • You get the idea…

What would those people have thought? Indeed… this is the end, our world is coming to an end! And we get that idea. Ever since Christ went to heaven until now, people have thought that NOW is the time.

I agree that we are living in the end times. Christ is coming back, and quickly! But when? Maybe today, perhaps we have to wait another thousands of years? I have no idea.

And now seriously… if we think today can happen… what do we do today? Are you afraid? Do you just to sit in your shelter? Do nothing? Pretend that nothing is happening, maybe? Let’s go back to Matthew 24:

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Matthew 24:44

Be ready! How? If you know or think that tomorrow is the last day… then today is THE day to try to save everyone while you still can. Now. Because don’t forget… in the next chapter it says this:

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:40

So where do you invest your time in?

  • Finding out whether today is the last day?
  • Saving what can still be saved?
  • Letting that person lie in the gutter or feeding them?
  • Share the good news of Christ?
  • Doing nothing?

So, we have the choice: Main issues (salvation) or (in all honesty) side issues such as “end times theories”…. If you think it might be over tomorrow, you have a choice…

I watched the news today in silence
Looks like the world is spinning out of control
Reality seems so cold
Do I hear echoes of Isaiah
All the prophecies are coming to one place
Maybe it’s time, the end’s in sight
But why search the sky
I should be searching inside

Maybe today, or maybe tomorrow
That’s not the question for me
No matter what time, I’m gonna follow
The Keeper of all eternity

Heaven will always be there waiting
The promise holds, our Lord will return
We know that time will surely come
But until it does, so much work must be done

Maybe today, or maybe tomorrow
That’s not the question for me
No matter what time, I’m gonna follow
The Keeper of all eternity

Maybe today, or maybe tomorrow
That’s not the question for me
No matter what time, I’m gonna follow
The Keeper of all eternity
